Kitchen Renovation

July 1, 2014

Our kitchen renovation is something that we have been thinking about/saving for since we started our addition 2 years ago. We are very fortunate to have the same contractor for both, so there were several preparations that were made for the kitchen while we were updating the rest of the house.

We spent the past weekend packing up everything in the kitchen and formal living room. There is a wall that divides the two rooms, that is being removed in order to open the space up.

Here you can see the empty rooms and the wall that will soon be gone.

Taken from the front door. This was will be replaced with a large L shaped island, opening up the fireplace to our most used space, The Kitchen.
From dining room entry. Wall on the right will be removed. Island/Sink will be more centered in this space.
This small closet will also be removed so that cabinets & counters can flow straight down this wall to the window.

Looking from our TV room doorway towards the future island. You can see how this space will eventually flow into the existing kitchen area.

After removing all the existing cabinets & appliances and taking a day to tackle the pine paneling, we are looking at this:

Here is a quick run down of all the things that will be happening in this space during the Demolition Phase:

  1. Remove existing ceiling. This room was added on to our house sometime in the early 1900's. The roof line was a disaster. In order to correct the roof line, we added a 2nd story lofted bedroom above. By doing this we are now able to raise the ceiling height to match the )almost) 10 foot ceilings throughout the rest of our house.
  2. Remove wall separating the kitchen and formal living room. There will be a manufactured beam installed as a header to ensure that proper support is there for the 2nd floor.
  3. Remove closet.
  4. Tear out all flooring. This room has several layers of laminate flooring and plywood over top of the old hardwood floors. We already know that most of the hardwood is too damaged to save, but we will be salvaging anything possible in order to reuse it to repair some sections of floor in other rooms. This room will get new Hickory hardwood floors.
Once this list is completed, we can move on to the fun stuff! I can't wait to share all of our final layout as well as go over the process of deciding what materials we want to use! I will be posting soon about our cabinets and countertop material!
